Monday 18th of October 2010 | Posted by Dave Taylor First Baptisms - What A Day!
This past Sunday was another very special day that will be forever marked in the minds of Sovereign Grace Church. It was a day that we had been looking forward to for some weeks, and the reason for that, was because the 17th October was the day chosen for our very first baptisms.
For us as a local Church baptisms are a big deal. Baptism is a blessing from Christ which is a sign (a picture) and a seal (a mark of being set apart) given to teach and assure believers of their salvation. Baptism points to the beginning of the Christian life (Matt 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 8.12) and displays one's commitment to turn from sin and trust in Christ for salvation. It's a visual demonstration of a person's union with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection. That's why in Sovereign Grace we practice baptism by immersion, which vividly pictures these realities.
Romans 6.4, "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."Having responded therefore to the gospel with repentance and faith in the finished work of Christ, we greatly encourage folk to get baptised. In obedience to Christ's command and as a testimony to God, the Church, oneself, and the world.
This past Sunday marked the first of these times for us as a Church. Over the next few days I am going to be posting the testimonies of the three folk who got baptised. They're wonderful stories of grace and my hope is that as you read them, you will be seriously encouraged. I think you will be!
In the meantime, here's some photos for you of the day... Good times, enjoy!
